After eight months of intense training, the CSFD combat challenge team, along with teams from across the USA and Canada, arrived in Deerfield Beach, FL for the World Combat Challenge with their own personal goals.

Battalion Chief RC Smith, whose original goal was to break 3:00 minutes and get a combat challenge jacket, achieved his goal on Thursday when he ran 2:43. He then decided he wanted to make it into the finals on Saturday. However that didn't happen. The cut-off was for eight chiefs and the eighth time was 2:28. Chief Smith immediately began strategizing for what he has to do in 2003 to make the finals.

Denny Peffer, did his best race on Thursday at 2:06 and ran against the record holder for 50 and over who did 1:53 at 60 years old. Peffer wanted to get under 2:00 at the finals, but a few of mishaps lead to a race of 2:13. He was disappointed that he didn't run a better race, but was happy with the great start he had.. Going up the stairs and hoisting the hose Peffer was neck and neck with the champion. Then Davis flew down stairs and was gone.

Of course Stacy Billapando wanted to win this one and she ran her best race at a time of 2:32. However, those Canadian Women from the Vaugn Fire Department did it in under 2:30.

The CSFD team is a young team. All the members combined have done the combat challenge less than ten times and are still in the running with competitors who have done the challenge 50 times.

For now, the team is taking a couple of weeks off and then will begin the winter season strength and speed training.
